Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour an 8x8-inch baking pan.
  • In a bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  • In another large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg.
  • Stir in the applesauce until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just blended. Fold in raisins or nuts if using.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
